What We Do

Three things, done well: growing pecan trees that survive their first season, and keeping hedges and trees shaped, healthy and under control.

Pecan Trees

Grafted and seedling pecan trees raised in our own nursery beds, hardened off and ready to go into the ground. We match the variety to your climate, soil and how much space you have.

Bare-root and bagged stock · seasonal availability

Hedging

New hedges planted and established, or tired boundaries cut back into shape. We work with indigenous and hardy species that hold a line through dry summers and cold winters.

Planting, shaping and ongoing maintenance

Pruning

Fruit and nut trees pruned for structure, light and yield, plus ornamental and shade trees kept safe and tidy. Clean cuts, sensible timing, and all the offcuts taken away.

The Trees We Grow

Four pecan varieties that crop reliably in our climate, plus seedling stock for larger plantings. Tell us your block and we'll point you at the right one.

Wichita

Grafted · our most planted variety

Vigorous and upright, with good nut size and a reliable crop most seasons. The safest choice if you are planting a block and want trees that get away quickly.

  • PollinatorDesirable
  • Spacing10 – 12 m
  • Years to crop5 – 6

Desirable

Grafted · the pollinator we plant with it

Large, well-filled nuts and a strong shell. Plant it alongside Wichita and both varieties crop noticeably better than either would alone.

  • PollinatorWichita
  • Spacing10 – 12 m
  • Years to crop5 – 7

Choctaw

Grafted · for the colder blocks

The one we recommend where frost comes late. Slower to start, but it settles in and crops steadily once it does, with excellent nut quality.

  • PollinatorDesirable
  • Spacing9 – 11 m
  • Years to crop6 – 8

Seedling Stock

Ungrafted · for shelter and bulk planting

Tough, cheap and grown outdoors from day one. Ideal for windbreaks, boundary plantings and anyone happy to wait for a mixed, natural crop.

  • PollinatorMixed
  • Spacing8 – 10 m
  • Years to crop8 – 10

A Family Nursery With Mud on Its Boots

Tolnut Nursery started with a handful of pecan seedlings and a stubborn belief that good trees shouldn't need babying. Everything we sell has been grown outdoors in our own beds, through real heat and real cold, so what you take home is already used to the conditions it will meet.

Alongside the nursery we run a hedging and pruning service. It keeps us honest — we see how trees behave ten years after planting, and we know exactly what a boundary needs to look like when it's finished. That experience goes back into the advice we give at the gate.

  • Varieties chosen for nut quality and reliable cropping.
  • Planting and spacing guidance included with every order.
  • Bulk orders for farms and smallholdings welcome.

What Our Customers Say

Growers, gardeners and neighbours who have bought trees or booked us in for a day's work.

We planted forty pecan trees along the bottom camp and lost two. The rest are away and growing strongly. The advice on spacing and watering was worth as much as the trees.

Hendrik M.Smallholding, Rietvlei

Our boundary hedge had gone completely wild. They cut it back, cleaned it up and left the place looking like a proper garden again. Tidy work and no mess left behind.

Lindiwe K.Homeowner, Karkloof Road

They pruned our old pecan trees properly for the first time in years. Better light through the canopy and a much easier harvest this season. We'll have them back every winter.
